Tea caddy of squarish shape with rounded shoulder and indentation in the belly. Dark brown stone ware with mottled brown glaze over which splashes and drip of a yellowish green glaze.
Probably Seto ware, perhaps Takatori.
Edo period, 19th century.

H ca. 3 inches

Few tiny pinprick-size flaws in the glaze due to age and handling. All in all fine condition.

These tea caddies were used for the tea ceremony to hold the powdered tea. Ceramic was typically used in the colder months. For the warm months, lacquer tea caddies (natsume) would be used.
