Chawan tea bowl, black Raku ware, cut and scrape décor, stoneware, antique, Japan
Chawan, tea bowl of slightly irregular round form. The top edge is wavy, slightly curled inward (clam shell), the sides are relatively thin. Light colored Raku stoneware covered in a typical black glaze. Right above the hip a row of three eye-shaped flat slices of clay and glaze has been cut away, revealing the underlying clay topped with a very thin layer of glaze that has turned greenish in the firing.
Potter’s seal impressed onto the bottom. Undeciphered. Raku….
Kyoto, Raku ware, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 1900 or perhaps a little earlier.
H 3.25 x diam. 4.75 in.
Several hairline cracks in the glaze inside and outside, only visible under magnifying glass, some pitting on the inside, glaze dulled, commensurate with usage.
