Fukusa gift cover, crane and minogame, shochikubai, hand embroidered silk, gold and silver thread, Japan
Large, almost square fukusa, which is used to ceremonially cover gifts. Dark green colored, finely ribbed silk basis on which the decoration is embroidered by hand in various colors of silk, silver thread and two shades of gold thread. On three corners there is a tassel made out of twisted silk threads and gold-thread.
Between banks of clouds a central golden cloud (or island) is placed with two origami paper fans, decorated with a flying crane (top) and a minogame (bottom). The fans are furthermore decorated with stylized waves, plum blossoms, bamboo and stylized pines. The latter three are for the three friends of winter, shochikubai. These are auspicious symbols, highly suitable for New Year’s gifts or wedding gifts.
The reverse is left undecorated.
H 26.8 x W 24.5 in.
Japan, Taisho era, 1910s-1920s
A few silk threads broken, gold thread came loose/was damaged in a few spots in the cloud bands commensurate with usage and age, one tassel missing, folding creases from storage. Very good overall condition.
