Katazome is a traditional Japanese stencil technique for dying fabric and paper. The stencils are called katagami. A rice paste is pushed through the open areas of the stencil onto the fabric. When the fabric is subsequently dyed, the dye will not penetrate the paste and will leave that area blank.
