Small chaire tea caddy, made of ceramic, for use in the tea ceremony during the colder months of the year. Bulbous body with short, everting neck and wavy mouth. Matching cover. Very light brown stoneware covered in red glaze with green patches and white streaks.

 

Impressed seal: Raku.

Probably seal of Raku Kichizaemon X (1795-1854), named Tannyu.

 

Japan, second quarter of 19th century.

 

H 2.1 x W 2.5 in.

 

Calcification in glaze crackle, small chip at lip of cover from which spring two glaze cracks. All in all, very good condition.
